SEVEN

MYSTERIOUS MESSENGERS

The children of Israel are free! Well, at least from the oppression of Pharaoh. When they leave Egypt, the Egyptians are so ready for them to be gone that they give their clothes and jewelry and money to them as a way to say, “Good riddance!” So in effect, the Israelites plunder Egypt without raising a finger.

But Pharaoh goes back on his word and pursues Moses and the entire nation of Israel with his army because he intends to destroy them!

God has other plans.

When the children of Israel walk as far as the shore of the Red Sea, they begin to grumble among themselves. They even say crazy things like, “We were better off in Egypt. Now we will die out here in the desert!” But God instructs Moses to hold out his staff over the water. Moses obeys, and God rolls back the waters of the sea and creates a path the Israelites can walk on. They cross the Red Sea by walking right through it, on dry ground.

They reach the other side of the sea, but Pharaoh is still in pursuit. He doesn’t even stop and think that perhaps the waters may fall back into the sea. Sure enough, they do, and all of Pharaoh’s armies are destroyed. Thus ends the saga of the oppression of Israel at the hand of Pharaoh.
